262. Percentage Building Blocks

A quick reverse percentages resource for you. I explain reverse percentages by using both calculations and diagrams. These resources can be used as a starter activity or as a selective discussion point. The presentations are editable and the pdf is identical to them. I hope they are useful in addressing the reverse percentages misconceptions!

255. Resource of the Week

I can’t wait to share the resource I stumbled across this week. I had planned a lesson on distance-time graphs, for my Foundation GCSE class, at home and went into school to print out my resources, only to discover the photocopier was broken!  I went to the TES website and found this brilliant set of resources on distance-time graphs. They required a small amount of printing, but engaged a ‘bouncy’ class very effectively!

  • The PowerPoint presentation takes you through interpreting graphs. It also supports my teaching method of ‘every graph tells a story’.
  • The Disney cartoon (from 1934) entertained the class and introduced the idea that graphs are not just A to B in the fastest time. Although they were a little concerned about the age gap between the Hare and the schoolgirl bunnies he was flirting with.
  • My usually less than enthusiastic class did an outstanding job explaining what the graphs showed, as shown by all these annotations:

233. Stealthy Cone Investigation

I like to encourage students to discover rules and formulae for themselves. It’s important that students understand where the maths comes from so they can apply their skills effectively. They also don’t have to rely on remembering a rule (which they may forget when they are stressed).

This resource is a neat and effective way to investigate the surface area of a cone through measuring circles and creating a 3D shape. Students get a physical feel for how the dimensions fit together. Throughout the lesson I let students choose their degree of accuracy in cutting, measuring and calculating. Of course, when we discussed the ‘solution’ at the end of the session it was impossible for me to put one correct answer on the board. So I generalised using a and b for the radii – explaining that everyone could check their method in general terms. The lovely ‘penny drop’ moment happened when my a’s and b’s suddenly became a general rule. I’d conned the class into using algebra because of the accuracy issue.

210. Most Wanted Percentages

I’ve been looking at how to teach percentage increase and decrease at Key Stage 3. If you can find 20%, you can obviously increase by 20% by adding it on. But does this reinforce the misconception that percentages are an addition, rather than multiplicative, function? I’ve started teaching multipliers for increase and decrease to a wider range of pupils, so it makes sense to introduce the concept earlier. I’ve used finding 120% as a way to increase by 20%. It opens up discussion as to why this works and pupils can form their own ideas on how to decrease.

There are only eight cards, but you could print out one set per pupil and shuffle them.

193. Resource of the Week – Reflective Detentions

This splendid resource by ealdor, on TES Resources, was recommended on Twitter last year. It is a Reflective Detention sheet. Pupils spend time in detention reflecting on what they did, why it wasn’t appropriate and what they will do to improve. The teacher then keeps the sheet as a record of the event. They can then be referred to at Parents Evening and in Departmental/Pastoral interventions.

Personally I have used these sheets since September and they have provided me with a constructive talking point at Parents Evening. In fact, one parent described them as handwritten confessions that their child couldn’t talk their way out of. Thank you ealdor!

188. Top Teachmeet Trumps Resource

 

I’m currently trying out ideas from the #mathsmeetnorthwest TeachMeet. Emma Weston did an excellent presentation on ‘Marking for motivation and progress’. She inspired me to look for a Top Trumps activity for my class – they needed some consolidation of solving equations with an unknown on each side and with brackets. I found this brilliant solving equations Top Trumps by Dusher on TES resources.

The Marvel comic themed algebra cards have three tiers of difficulty and went down a storm. My class would have happily played all lesson, if I had let them.

 

Who would have thought that equations could be so engaging?
