274. Resource etiquette

There has been some discussion on social media recently regarding misuse of downloaded or copyright material. They broadly fall into three categories:

1. Unethical people are deliberately passing off resources as their own on both free and paid for resource sites.

2. Some people are sharing resources which were inspired by others.

3. Some people don’t know the origin of resources, but they think they are good and are sharing them via their own means (blog, social media, resource sites).

Those in category 1 are dishonest and making money/taking credit from the hard work of others. This must stop. Those who create resources and have blogs will often put a website address in the footer. It’s common sense really, but this isn’t possible for everyone and can still be removed by the most determined faker. Legal or moral copyright must be respected.

Category 2 people – why not put a credit in the footers? ‘Inspired by @Mr_Person’
You get the credit for your work and the inspiration gets the recognition for their creativity.

Category 3 people – well, a bit of housekeeping would avoid this situation. If I download and save a resource from a website I add the source to the file name.
For example:

If you still feel you must share, be honest. I posted a resource on bright vs gifted children. It was an old worksheet I found with no source reference. In my description of the sheet I stated that this was a typed up version of an existing resource and I did not take credit for its creation. If the creator asked me to remove it, I would comply asap.

All this comes down to is good manners. If we treat the work of others with respect, we treat our colleagues with respect. There is enough negativity out there to sink the merriest teacher’s boat, so we should do our best to make the teaching careers of others a smooth voyage!

273. #MathsPics15

The Summer is here and obviously we switch off from teaching …
… Yeah, right!

You will see something and think – that will make a great lesson on (insert topic), then life will catch up and the idea will fade. The MathSandpit is here to help in such matters.

272. Mr Men Maths Mobiles

Are you a fan of ‘The Mr Men’? Are you a hopeless Maths geek? Get yourself over to SolveMyMaths!

I’m sure I’ve mentioned the brilliant Maths Mr Men and Little Misses before. Here is what I did with the set I printed and laminated (click on each picture to enlarge):

There are three sections to this display: the title tetrahedron, the mobile and the invisible wall.

Title tetrahedron

You will need: six garden canes, four strong elastic bands, sugar paper, tape and your title.

It’s a straightforward tetrahedron made from canes, with the corners secured with elastic bands. Then stick your title to the paper and wrap it around one face, trimming sticky-out bits and securing with tape. It ‘s a good way to make sure no one accidentally walks into your mobile.

The mobile

You will need: four wire coat-hangers, tape, Mr Men cards, fishing line and your title

My mobile is long and narrow because of the space I hung it in. The title hanger has been stretched into a rhombus shape and had a long loop of fishing line attached. The ends of the line were covered in white duct tape which you can see at the bottom of the title as a white triangle. The title was attached front and back.

The lower hangers were bent into a ‘C’ shape by pushing the straight base of the hanger upwards. Tape was wrapped near the ends of each arm to ensure the hanging shapes don’t slide along. Fishing line is threaded through the loops at the end of the arms and knotted. The knots are concealed inside the Mr Men cards, which were one sided. When I attach the remaining hangers to other things I squeeze the hook closed and cover the join in duct tape – it saves it unhooking later.

Invisible wall

You will need: duct tape, fishing line, wide Mr Men cards, sellotape, two coat-hangers and an old metre stick (or equivalent).

I found an old, split metre stick in the back of the stockcupboard and covered it in duct tape to make it safe. I marked out three Mr Men card widths across and attached long lengths of fishing line. The knots were held secure and camouflaged by more duct tape. I bent the two coathangers into the C-shapes mentioned earlier and hung them in the final position. The next bit is tricky – you need to knot your fishing line to each arm of the coat-hangers whilst ensuring you keep the line parallel and the hangers level. I found standing on the metre stick was very helpful!

That’s your invisible ‘wall’ set up – now for the wall display!

Attach your first two Mr Men cards between lines 1 & 2 and 3 & 4 by wrapping tape around the ends of the cards, encasing the line at the very end. Attach your third card above the first row between lines 2 & 3. Keep repeating until you wall is complete. I decorated the hangers with extra cards.

Safety

As you can see, my display is hanging off a metal stair case. For safety, I flattened the coat-hanger hook against the stair rise and sealed it with duct tape so no one will catch their toes.

Observation

I’ve already seen a student stand in-front of the display and discuss it with her teacher and lots of students are actively looking/reading as they go up the stairs. It’s only been up two days and it is a talking point. It’s sure to grow as there are more Mr Men & Little Misses that I haven’t yet printed.

271. Bored with exponentials

I have a Pi-loving colleague who is a whizz with voting presentations.

Mr D created these review activities for use with A2/C3 students. The focus is logarithms, exponentials and Ln functions, including models for growth and decay. I particularly like the equation measuring boredness in a Maths lesson. It’s obviously wrong – how could a Maths lesson possibly be boring?

270. A whiff of cheese and exponentials

I used this as a starting point whilst teaching the Edexcel C3 course. You could even demonstrate with fresh and not so fresh cheese. I’m sure the staffroom or sixth form fridge will have some ‘interesting’ examples.

269. Snappy Proportion

Proportion … it comes in so many forms and different students grasp different elements at different speeds. Differentiation hell!

What about a little resource that offers up 4x8x8 variations of question ranging from simple direct to proportion to inversely proportional to the square? It’s not a new app, it’s an old app – a fortune-teller snapdragon:

  • The first decision chooses level of difficulty – students pick a number and count through the opening/shutting process.
  • The second gives the information to calculate k (eg y=kx) – the number of open/shut moves is specified.
  • The third asks you to apply your equation to a hidden number.
  • Students increase the level of challenge as they do more questions.

A Blogger’s Apology

You may have noticed that the updates to MathSandpit have slowed a little. The reasons are threefold:

  1. I have a research project for the NPQSL to write up
  2. I have recently taken up the role of Head of Department for one year
  3. I’m trying to create a comprehensive index for the website

So when I have time I will add new posts, but it may not be the weekly service which you may have come to expect. In the meantime I will be tweeting older resources which you may have forgotten about.
